Roofing Shingle Review: GAF Timberline HD Architectural Laminate/Composite Shingle
As a roofing company Chase Construction NW, Inc. has been providing some of the best roofing services in the Northwest for over a decade, with 20 years experience. In those 20 years we have installed virtually every type of roofing from almost every manufacturer. We have seen products come and go, and others stand the test of time. As a new resource to consumers looking for information on roofing and its application we are starting a new series in our roofing blog called Certified Roofing Contractor Review. In this series we will share products that we feel in our professional opinion are the best roofing products to use.
Today I would like to review GAF’s Timberline HD architectural laminate roofing shingle. We have been installing GAF shingles for over 15 years so I believe our input should be of some value to you.
A few facts about the GAF Timberline HD roofing shingle:
The Timberline shingle is Americas long standing # 1 selling shingle.
In 2011 GAF made advance technological changes to their roofing matt enabling them to offer the new Limited Lifetime warranties. You can learn more about these changes by watching “Chasing The Dream” and “Extreme Shingle Testing”. This changed the market and made the 30, 40 and 50 year options obsolete. All other roofing manufacturers made the shift to limited life time also, but made no changes to their mats. This makes our confidence in the Timberline HD shingle even stronger.
The GAF brand and Timberline HD shingle are backed independently by the Good Housekeeping seal of approval. This is not an easy industry backing endorsement to achieve, furthering the quality and credibility of the Timberline shingle.
With the new matt on the Timberline roofing shingle, GAF was able to lighten the weight per roofing square from 240 lbs to 220lbs. This is great for the roofing installers as its easier on their bodies. However, the reduced shingle weight has also become a point of controversy in the roofing industry. Many of the other top shingle brands such as CertainTeed, Owens Corning and IKO have criticized the reduced weight of the Timberline Shingle. GAF’s response to this criticism is their fit vs fat campaign. GAF has proven the durability of their new advance matt technology through extreme testing, and left their competitors with no real substantial ability to discredit the industries leading Timberline HD shingle.
We highly recommend the Timberline HD shingle. Here are a few more bullet points for the Timberline shingles:

GAF is the industry leader in roofing shingles and choosing a roofing contractor that recommends them and is certified with GAF is the way to go.
Thanks Roofing Contractor in Houston, I agree 100%.
Your write-up is truly informative. A lot more than that, it??s engaging, compelling and well-written. I would desire to see even far more of these types of fantastic writing.
I live in New York, & I undersdtand that the GAF TIMBERLAND is a great Shingle, but HOW DOES THE OWENS CORNING SHINGLE COMPARE? ARE THERE DIFFERENT GRADES
OF OWENS CORNING SHINGLE?
Owens corning has a great wind warranty. I prefer GAF due to combining the best strengths of the ELK/GAF shingles. GAF also introduces the advance mat technology in 2011 and the first limited lifetime shingle. OC and the other manufacturers offer limited lifetime shingles as well, but made no changes to their shingles to justify the extended warranty coverage.
