Roof Repair Tips
Even though roofs are built to last decades, extreme weather conditions such as hail, high wind or heavy rains often cause premature & significant damage that most likely has to be addressed immediately.
Appropriate repairs should be handled as soon as weather allows to do so safely, as a damaged roof may directly affect the stability of the entire structure of the house.
While you wait for your roofing contractor to handle the repairs, there are certain things you as a homeowner can do to temporarily stop the leaks in their tracks and avoid any further damage.
- Safety first! Do not attempt to climb the roof in adverse conditions. Wait for the wind, hail, rain or lightning to stop first. This sounds like common sense but many homeowners will desperately try anything to protect their home, risking their health & life in the process. Once the bad weather moves out you can assess the condition of your roof safely.
- Start the inspection from the ground up and figure out the most effective way of stopping further damage before a roofer has a chance to handle repairs.
- Try to gain control over the spread of the water seeping in and further damaging the internal structure. Tarp & buckets are better than nothing.
- Remove any puddles of water or stagnant water forming on the roof.
- If you can successfully locate, then plug the source of the leak by whatever means necessary, that will make the most impact. Use patches, rubber sheets, sealants, tarps even duct tape. Your solution may not be pretty or long-term but will buy enough time for the roofer to get in there and repair the damage in a more permanent and appropriate way.
- As always, remember to stay safe and take special care to not inflict further damage to your roof.
Most roofers provide emergency repair services. When choosing a roofer, make sure they are licensed, insured, can provide you with references, warranty information and a written, detailed estimate.

Heavy spring rain may exploit any small cracks or problem areas on your roof. Look for any signs of moisture in your attic, as well as interior areas of your home. Repairing small leaks now will help prevent bigger problems down the road.

I actually do have a couple of questions for you if it’s allright.
Could it be just me or does it look like like a few of the responses look like they are coming from brain dead individuals?
😛 And, if you are writing on additional online sites, I would

Could you post a list of all of all your shared sites like your twitter feed, Facebook page or linkedin profile?
Great information. It’s always good to see other roofing companies helping their customers understand the process!
The time has come for us to replace the roof of our house. Thank you for this information of how to start and carry out this process. I like the advice given about getting an extensive warranty.
I have found that flat roofs can have many problems and require that from time to time you pay attention to the roof. Neglect can cost you big money. Rain and snow can accumulate in one spot if it doesn’t drain properly but if you take the time to look at your roof every season or quarterly you can spot potential problems before they become an issue.Â
Yeah, so much damage is caused from people not cleaning out their gutters on a regular basis. If your gutters leak the first place to check is the downpipes around your home because sometimes a tennis ball or something else could simply be blocking your downpipes. Nick
Good information!
